IMPROVE OPERATIONS

Find the bottleneck before adding more work

Use a small set of measured inputs to prioritize production, purchasing and customer-experience improvements.

Who this helps: Growing teams, manufacturers and product businesses.
Your starting result: A focused improvement hypothesis with a measurable before-and-after check.

1. Pick a repeatable process and baseline

Choose a process with a concrete output, such as fulfilled orders, good units per shift or completed quotes. Record the date window and units. Keep actual observations separate from estimates. Without a consistent denominator, a comparison can hide rather than explain a problem.

Put it to work: Write the process, output measure, date window, source and the person responsible for checking the data.

2. Investigate one constraint

Compare the time or capacity of each stage and check downtime, rework and delays. A modeled bottleneck is a question to investigate on the floor, not an instruction to buy equipment. For purchasing, collect measured specifications and acceptance requirements before asking suppliers to quote.

Put it to work: Name the suspected constraint and the evidence needed to confirm it. Prepare a small change that is reversible.

3. Retest using the same definitions

Choose a review period and compare like-for-like measurements after the change. Note other factors that could explain the difference, such as product mix or staffing. Keep a change only when the observed result and trade-offs support it.

Put it to work: Record what changed, what stayed constant, the measured result and the next decision. Do not treat a forecast as realized savings.

Tools For Your Next Step

Calculations and AI drafts are decision support. Actual equipment suitability, supplier qualification, quality approval and purchasing require separate verification.
